The Vivid Satellite Digital Decoder is an alternative platform to other digital satellite decoders in the market. The channels o­n the Vivid Decoder are encrypted and a Smart Card is required to view these channels. The difference, however, is that there is currently no monthly subscription required to view and listen to the channels available.

Originally designed to receive video and audio signals encoded in the MPEG format (Video- MPEG-2, Audio - MPEG 1 & 2 Layer II, a.k.a. musicam), and thanks to the fact that it contains a CPU, the decoder can be used to perform other functions as well, besides watching TV or listening to a radio channel.

To enable other multimedia applications to run o­n the decoder, it contains a layer of software called Middleware (in this case supplied by OpenTV - version EN2).

The decoder is equipped with decryption hardware and software to make it possible to provide ‘conditional access’ to certain channels. The encryption system in use is provided by NagraVision.

At the moment all information displayed/processed by the decoder comes from the data stream received via satellite. The decoder is equipped with a modem-port, which can make it possible to access other content via a dialup connection as well as provide access to data services and multimedia.

Finally, the Vivid Smart Card is linked to o­ne specific Vivid Decoder and will not work in any other Vivid Decoder, improving encryption options and security.
